The Quran (Arabic: الْقُرْآن), also referred to as Al-Quran Al-Hakeem (The Wise Quran), is the central religious text of Islam. Muslims believe it to be the literal word of God (Allah), revealed incrementally to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over approximately 23 years through the archangel Gabriel.

Meaning of "Al-Hakeem"

The term "Al-Hakeem" signifies "The Wise" or "Full of Wisdom." When the Quran is described as Al-Quran Al-Hakeem, it highlights several profound characteristics:

  • Source of Wisdom: It is considered a book of ultimate wisdom, providing guidance that is timeless and applicable to all aspects of human life.

  • Authority and Decisiveness: It serves as a final, authoritative criterion (Al-Furqan) for distinguishing between truth and falsehood.

  • Coherence and Structure: Despite being revealed over two decades in different contexts, the Quran exhibits a remarkable "ring structure" and internal consistency, which believers cite as evidence of its divine origin.

  • Perfect Design: Its rulings, narratives, and ethical teachings are viewed as perfectly balanced, addressing the needs of humanity at both personal and societal levels.

Significance in Islamic Life

  • Supreme Authority: It is the primary source of Islamic creed, ritual, ethics, and law. Islamic sciences, such as grammar, exegesis (Tafseer), and theology, were developed to study and understand its text.

  • Spiritual Guidance: The Quran is often described as Light (Noor) and Guidance (Huda), intended to lead humanity from darkness to enlightenment.

  • Literary Excellence: Widely regarded as the finest work in Arabic literature, its eloquence is considered a "literary miracle" that remains inimitable.

  • Recitation and Memorization: The oral tradition of the Quran remains central to Islamic practice. Those who memorize the entire text are known as Hafiz, and its recitation is an essential part of daily ritual prayers (Salah).

The text is organized into 114 chapters (Surahs), which consist of individual verses (Ayat). It continues to be the foundation of the religious, social, and intellectual life of Muslims worldwide, transcending language and geography.
